Holiday Gift Ideas for Foodies and Homesteading Enthusiasts

I thought I’d share some of my top picks for gifts for this year. For foodies, homesteaders, and the kids in your life, there’s something for everyone.

Screen Shot 2015-02-05 at 11.35.39 AMThe Homegrown Paleo Cookbook – yes, this is my book and a shameless plug for it. I spent two years writing the most complete guide to living a more sustainable life. It not only contains over 100 gluten free, seasonal recipes but also a full guide to growing your own food. From raising chickens and bees to growing vegetables, my book will give you all the knowledge to get started as a homesteader. I’ve also included a lifestyle guide with tips on how to unplug and destress, plus how to throw a killer pig roast! I’m super proud of how it turned out and feel it’s the perfect gift for everyone interested in learning more about sustainable food production and cooking from scratch.

worm-factoryA Worm Factory:  Composting with worms allows you to turn kitchen scraps, paper waste and cardboard into nutrient-rich soil for your plants. The Worm Factory composting system makes the entire process quick and easy. With a thermo siphon air flow design, the Worm Factory increases the composting speed. Now you can produce compost much faster than traditional composting methods. This version of the Worm Factory comes in black, and it’s also available in green and terra-cotta.

51NfQjOesjLAn Instant Pot: This gadget has literally changed my life in the kitchen. It’s a pressure cooker and slow cooker, but I recommend using it as a pressure cooker primarily. You can make a homemade broth in less than two hours, a rich stew in 35 minutes, and so on. The best part is, it’s completely safe. You don’t need to babysit it on your stove like traditional pressure cookers. It’s a complete game changer for people who don’t want to spend all day in the kitchen. I use mine several times a week.

91UWvP3xW7L._SL1500_Recycled Sari Patchwork Blanket: Each one is completely unique and reversible. They’re made of 100% cotton by women who have escaped from the sex trade, empowering women in India and Bangladesh. I love how lightweight they are. Perfect as a throw, a twin bedspread, or a beach blanket. Hand wash in cold water. 36″ x 78″.

Savory-Pack-1-800x600Spices: Check out these great spice gift sets from Primal Palate. The quality, freshness, and flavor would surpass anything available to you in grocery stores. Our spices are certified USDA-Organic, Whole30 Approved, Certified Gluten-Free, Kosher, Non-GMO, and Non-Irradiated. In other words, they are un-messed-around-with, and just as nature intended!

Tomahawk_SteakGrass-Fed Bison Meat: I love Honest Bison and have to say that the meat is incredible. Give the foodie on your list something they’ve probably never tried, and I assure you they’ll love. Bison tastes like beef, only sweeter and a little more intense. These steaks come frozen and are easy to prepare. You’ll be their favorite gift-giver with this one!

Magazines: Some of my favorite include:

Orion:  “It is Orion’s fundamental conviction that humans are morally responsible for the world in which we live, and that the individual comes to sense this responsibility as he or she develops a personal bond with nature.” I have given this as a gift to several friends interested in “Paleo 2.0” – sustainability, culture, and all that comes along with it.

Utne-Cover-Fall-2015 jpgUTNE Reader: Utne Reader is a digest of the new ideas and fresh perspectives percolating in arts, culture, politics, and spirituality. Utne readers are enthusiastic and motivated agents of social change who want to spend their time and resources making the world a better place. They crave a well-rounded perspective on current events that moves beyond the headlines and sound bites—something Utne Reader has been providing for more than 30 years. A combination of original writing and reprints gleaned from independent media, Utne is published quarterly in print and as a quick-read monthly digital issue.

I also love Mother Earth News, Grit, and Paleo Magazine (I’m a staff writer, so I happen to LOVE this one!)

For the kids, in addition to the worm factory listed above, check out this game 10 Days in the USA, or 10 Days in Europe. If you’re considering an advent calendar, why not choose a fair trade one from Divine Chocolate.

Finally, consider a donation instead of a gift. My two picks this year include The Savory Institute and The Farm to Consumer Legal Defense Fund. These two organizations are at the forefront of saving our food system and our rights as consumers to buy from the farmers of our choice. They’re doing great work and deserve your consideration as you plan who to donate to this holiday season.
