Update: Kale vs. Cow Takes Off!

Kale vs Cow

News on 1/23/18: We just secured another $75,000 within the last 24 hours through Clovis Culture (directly to our 501c3) and another donor giving $25,000 through our campaign! HOLY COW!

About a month ago, I wasn’t sure if I was onto something big or just delusional. To be honest, I’ve been hammering away at the idea that meat can be healthy, sustainable AND ethical for a long time, and for a while, it felt like nobody was listening.

This past summer, I was nearly halfway through a book on this topic and decided to turn my attention to creating a film. It’s one thing to TELL people why “better meat” is important, but I wanted folks to SEE why. I enlisted the help of independent filmmaker Myna Joseph and we set off on developing a treatment to tell the story of why the case for better meat is important.

Since last August, this film has been my full-time job – on top of having a busy clinical nutrition practice and raising two kids on a farm. I’ve invested much of my personal savings and a lot of energy in order to make this happen. We identified the stories we wanted to follow, a budget, hired a lawyer, shot a pitch video and developed a crowdfunding campaign. Right after it went up, I had a horrible, sick feeling that maybe this was a really bad idea.

But then something magical happened that turned everything around.

People responded! In less than a month, we reached our initial goal of $75,000 so that we could get started on the project. I was completely blown away! We then raised our goal to keep the momentum going, and I’m happy to announce the crowdfunder is now over $100,000!

With this money, we’ll be able to cover our development and legal expenses, shoot a couple of storylines, and edit them into a sample showing how we intend to tell the story in order to secure the rest of the funding needed to complete the project. Until we complete the film, we’ll keep the crowdfunding page up and will be accepting donations that will go towards production, editing, and distribution of the film.

We’re now scheduling our first shoots and uncovering some intriguing storylines to follow that will really help us tell this story in an emotionally compelling way. I can’t tell you how exciting it is to actually get working on this dream project. If I won the lottery, the only thing I’d be doing differently would be getting this project done faster! This is my dream job – a true passion project, and I can’t think of anything I’d rather be working on!

But the most important reason behind this post is to say a big THANK YOU to everyone for your support. Even if your donation was $5, or if you just shared the campaign (we had nearly 6,000 shares on Facebook!), your help has made it possible for me to get started. I especially want to call out those who gave over $500, my “perk” contributors, the non-profits helping to share the campaign, and to those who gave me extra support and love on social media, emails and on podcasts.  Thank you!

  1. I am so excited about this documentary but I’m struggling to find any trace of publication. What’s the status please?

      1. I am so glad to hear this! Got a bit worried it might not be on anymore when the links in the article above weren’t working and I couldn’t find any updates more recent than 2018.

          1. Amazing thank you. That’s done. I can just imagine how busy things are. Really appreciate you doing this, it’s so needed.
